Queen Elizabeth II–always a drink in hand and a ciggie butt, but wearing real leopard skin here!–toasted Carolyn Goodman’s win at Windsor Castle because she wants her British Airways to keep making money on their London-Las Vegas route!
Afterward, she said she’d have quit and retired to Miami if Chris G won because that would have been proof positive that the world would be ending soon!
I was pretty tough on both Carolyn and Chris this cycle having really wanted Larry Brown as a choice in the finals.
In politics, grown ups often don’t win, but in retrospect, Carolyn ‘Giggles’ Goodman won because people like her; Chris G, not nearly as much.
The job itself is more host/hostess than leader and cutting ribbons and being the region’s ambassador is something Giggles’ limited intellect can handle well.
I thought both had very good TV ads though Tom Letizia hit the Grand Slam with his terrific designs for Goodman; very impressive and his firm will be much sought out in the political world now all over the state.
The ‘saucy broad’ beat the ‘diesel dyke’ as the person voters wanted representing their city to the world. That said, of 222,000 registered voters in the city, only 25% came out and that’s better than the recent historical average.
Chris G will take her paltry 21,000 votes as her mandate to wreak more havoc on the party and Southern Nevada after having the audacity to call herself a ‘fiscal conservative’ to the LVRJ’s editorial board!
Voters showed some wisdom in defeating George Assad and Mike Mayberry too proving there is some hope and that voters don’t want corrupted people in office here. Everyone is delighted that Steve Redlinger lost the hyper-corrupted Mayberry race as no one appears to like the two-faced phony guy who plays both parties for a buck!
Major kudos go to the City of Henderson which showed some innovation with their twelve voting sites on Election Day rather than at each precinct saving them a bundle as most of us are EarlyVoting more and more!
Condolences to Heidi Almase and her family who lost their Grandma on Election Day and she’s in Nebraska with the post-election bittersweet nod to family first; always first.
Damn, I miss both of mine so much I’m getting a little verklempt now! I’m very blessed at 50 still having a grandfather alive and well!
I will now publicly apologize for getting your race’s outcome wrong and happily accept my ‘neener neener neener’ from your campaign. I’m also writing the treatment for the Lifetime, Television for Women treatment of your compelling narrative.
What I like most about Caesar Almase’s old lady is how normal and how real a person she is; when ‘youse guys’ get to know her, you’ll see this in her too!!!
I was also wrong about NLV’s Catherine ‘Kat’ Ramsey’s final numbers too, she more than doubled my prediction of winning by 6 points and I am very pleased to be wrong about that!
Ramsey’s campaign is testament to the simple fact that voters respond positively to positive campaigns; she never slammed her opponent and did not take advantage of Marsha’s ethics complaint findings either.
It was bare-bones, simple, and to the point: ‘This is me and who I am, let me introduce myself, and this is what I want to do for us!’
Beautifully done Kat!
Both women reinforced Nevada’s love affair with women in office; one of the few things we lead the nation in. Both benefitted by our believing that women are fairer and less corrupted and we will be served well by both!
Marsha Simms Kimble disintegrated after the ethics finding and couldn’t recover though the error was minor and I offered to tell her how to pivot out of it, but she never called choosing to listen to inexperienced people in her sphere instead of my 30 years experience.
Marsha, you completely missed some big things you could have done to enhance yourself and your campaign and I’ll tell you about it when I see you.
NLV Ward 4 was the only race in my entire political life career that I called exactly right! I’ve been very close many times though never exactly right!
Richard Cherchio ran a terrible, if not despicable race and inadvertently, Catherine Ramsey benefitted by being polar opposite his race as voters wanted to send to him a message that his bile and vile was a huge turnoff produced by kids with no experience doing Poli-Sci 101 attacks on his opponent’s family too.
They bled him and his money dry and they completely destroyed his political brand by doing so. Those are the people he really should be suing!
Richard Cherchio will never again be in elective public office.
We all saw Richard Cherchio’s ugly side very publicly and his enemies are too many. He proved himself politically retarded by being the proverbial bull in the political china shop not at all understanding nuance and also being completely unknown by his own Ward’s voters.
Of the Ward’s 28,577 voters, 14,978 are Democrats and this should have been a landslide for Cherchio but he turned off three Dem voters for every one that he landed and got out to vote.
Wagner proved formidable as an unknown and produced a masterpiece with both the current and former mayors weighing in on a final mailer! Great idea and whoever came up with it deserves the good Dr’s thanks!
The recount effort will prove futile but is a correct call as his team continues to bleed his money solely for their benefit; that was their only concern the entire campaign.
Classy would have conceded knowing that Mayor Buck now has her three vote majority and has to bear the brunt of that for future cuts.
It was agonizing to watch a friend so publicly destroy himself all by himself.
Richard is widely rumored to have his eye on immediately retaking North Valley Dems he created and running for ClarkDems chair this summer too!
Cherchio’s hatred 0f Shari Buck destroyed his own political career and if he does run for mayor, you’ll see he’s still not over her beating him in 2007!
This is one I got right and Coffin wins a pyrrhic victory over Martinez and the war is on within Hispanic blocs at NVDEMS. I wrote that he will have hell to pay and he really will! The vested interests that assisted him either directly or indirectly on behalf of the mob’s and developers’ very substantial holdings in the ward are very likely to bite him in the ass someday.
First, no one perceives Bob Coffin, who turns 147 years old on October 7th, as Hispanic—he was the ‘white’ candidate appealing directly to scared white voters and he won the vast plurality of them. His mother may have been Hispanic, or hired an Hispanic cleaning lady once, but there is absolutely nothing in his makeup that conveys even a passing interest in things ‘Hispanic’.
He completely ignored my plea on these pages to him and other ‘Hispanic’ leaders to finally get an Hispanic in LVMPD senior leadership (Deputy Chief or higher); maybe that will change now since he’s changed himself into ‘Super-Spic’ as one NVDEM big shot said sharply and with venom in their voice to me—hence the new/latest war!
It was all so unnecessary and Coffin’s phony legal threats are what’s called ‘pissing into the wind’ as any suit will bring up reams of his decades long political shit that the Martinez campaign never even mentioned.
I consider Adriana a friend and strongly championed her effort because I saw a distinct change in her public life since joining Lois’s team; its political maturity and I still think that she was the better choice.
I really regret not meeting with her early on to give her advice ‘friend to friend’ because she and her team lost their message and focus that resulted in only answering accusations and throwing accusations of their own.
If Adriana had done what Kat Ramsey did in NLV, she’d be a councilwoman today!
Part of it was too much advice and too many cooks in the kitchen. Her manager Lauren Harmon is a wonderful young woman who was once on Rep Gabby Giffords’ team down in AZ, but local races are quite different that congressional races and out-of-staters are behind the 8 ball from the get-go. Erin Bilbray, co-founder of EmergeNV with Martinez, informally advised and is too nice a guy and wants to be the great facilitator, conciliator, and everyone’s friend, and wasn’t at all prepared for Bob Coffin’s ‘Sonofabitch side’ which runs very deep within him.
Those who asked for my advice were winners, those that didn’t—like Adriana, Richard, Sonny, and Marsha, did not.
And don’t let the Grandfatherly Coffin public demeanor fool you, like Richard Cherchio, Coffin showed his ugly side in this race too and permanently damaged his own brand by doing so too.
I’ll be meeting with Adriana and Erin and I’m confident the first thing out of my mouth is going to be ‘you should have listened to me and had your picture on your outdoor signs’!
I saw Bob’s grumpy mug every single day of the campaign and Adriana is much easier on the eyes than he is and Liker’s signs overwhelmed hers and she should have taken Liker’s down herself!
We need to see what you look like in Nevada and as predicted here long ago, that was a major, fatal mistake!
Your livery of blue and yellow was juvenile and more fitting for Susan Roger’s trophy baby nursery than a professional, handsome, stylish appeal for a judicial vote for you!
…and where was your mug on those signs?
Sonny will be back I think as early as 2012 and I think he’ll invite me to lunch first too!
My comments on ‘the Dawg’ can be caustic at times and one judge who loves reading me once told me, ‘you are so mean sometimes’, and that’s true, but as I say in this blog’s credo above in ‘What is WatchdogWag’, it really is to slap some people right across the face and to guide them into better behaviors!
For instance, I was very rough on Erin Bilbray knowing she’s a good woman and trying to get her back on track and that worked, reforms were implemented, and money-grubbing Empress Yvette Williams and her sleazy old man notwithstanding, fewer are using the levers of political party money for their own personal benefit when in party leadership.
Some are surprised that Erin and I talk. I truly believe that it’s supposed to be a calling not a profit making venture to be in party leadership or public office and she ‘gets’ that about me; it was never personal and it never is.
I ran the 2006 JJ Dinner, and no one took a dime!
Most of you would be shocked at Mikey in my professional life; I’m not only devastatingly handsome, but I’m very talented too. In my political hobby of 30 years, I have never mentioned an opponent’s name or transgressions, nor have I ever reflexively reacted to attacks.
I’m batting .825 over those 30 years of campaigns I’ve been involved with by doing so. It took me over six weeks to even begin to write Cherchio’s stuff when I ran his 2007 effort because I believe that you have to get a sense of who a person is and what they’re all about before you can even advise them on the simplest things.
Sometimes, the five year plans I create for political people only end up being a year or two!
I think this is why a lot of you like my observations; I’m saying out loud what you can’t easily articulate.
No one does that today. They teach in Poli-Sci classes to keep firing and firing and that’s never been my style and I think that that hurts the Body Politic in general and reinforces voter cynicism and non-participation.
You have to be a really big asshole in either party for me not to respond if you ask how I’m seeing things or what you should do. I’m the guy who tells you what you may not want to hear, but also helps your own discovery of things you never knew about yourself and how to make that appeal to voters.
Ask Kat how she did it all without any expensive professional advice from people who don’t know her or care about her, then ask yourself why you’re running and what you would like to do for us!
Maybe more people would come out to vote if more candidates approached public life in this very simple, basic way!
I’m always the hopeful cynic!
