MGM-Mirage, CityCenter, and No Human Rights 12/20/2009

The silence of local Las Vegas ‘progressives’ and others supposedly championing Human Rights, is consent and blessing of MGM-Mirage partnering in Human Trafficking, Human Slavery, Human Sex Trafficking, Child Sex Trafficking, Female Subjugation, Females as Chattel, Mandatory Capital Punishment of Gay People, Migrant Worker Abuse, and full support of Human Torture.

This is the reality of MGM-Mirage’s 50% partner in CityCenter—Dubai World—which has become the hallmark and the corporate signature of the MGM-Mirage Company; the State of Nevada’s number one employer is also its number one corporation in global Human Rights abuses, human exploitation, and human degradation.

Here’s the local reaction:

The Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada:  Silent

ProgressNow Nevada: Silent

NevadaNOW: Silent

LGBT groups in Nevada: Silent

Nevada’s ‘progressive’ blogs: Silent

Religious groups in Nevada: Silent

Nevada’s political leadership in both parties: Silent

AFL-CIO Nevada and all of organized labor in Nevada: Silent

Dubai and its sisters within the United Arab Emirates—including Dubai’s Sovereign Wealth Fund global investment arm of Dubai World are not signatories to the following international conventions regarding basic human dignity and rights:

International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights

International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights

Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and member of their Families

Convention Against Torture

There is no ‘free-press’ in Dubai—there is no freedom of association in Dubai. 90% of its workforce is foreign migrant and suffers 90% of the exploitation and abuse from its fascist regime. Today, Las Vegas based MGM-Mirage embraces all of this Third World human exploitation.

The silence of Nevada’s ‘progressive’ organizations regarding the horrific treatment of fellow human beings within the Emirates further empowers the UAE to deny everyone from their own women to hundreds of thousands of migrant, enslaved workers, even the most basic of Human Rights and dignities.

This is now the name and face of MGM-Mirage and its CityCenter; built on the backs of the oppressed and the exploited half a world away.

MGM-Mirage couldn’t even extract a weekly roundtrip flight from the UAE to Las Vegas from the rapidly growing Emirates Airlines; that’s how weak their position is today.

Each dollar you gamble or otherwise spend at CityCenter or at any MGM-Mirage resort, signals to its chairman, James Murren, and its Board of Directors—who all willingly and very enthusiastically partnered with one of the worlds’ worse Human Rights violators—that it’s fine by us that our state and the MGM-Mirage corporate brand now represents human-on-human tyranny and exploitation in the Third World.

This shame is registering everywhere else in the world except in Nevada and amongst its ‘progressives’.  Their indifference is appalling and indicative of groups who are hot in their rhetoric about Human Rights…except in their own backyard; no one in Nevada has said a word about its largest employer partnering in full support of the Human Rights atrocities of the MGM-Mirage Company’s investment partner: Dubai World.

This isn’t a liberal or conservative issue, a Democrat or Republican one either; it ultimately comes down to whether or not we subscribe to treating our fellow citizens the world over with the same basic rights and dignities that we enjoy as Americans—and as citizens who support a freer and more just world—whether we will continue to tolerate the MGM-Mirage Company partnering with one of the world’s most notorious Human Rights abusers in the name of corporate greed and platinum parachutes.

Former MGM-Mirage chairman, Terry Lanni, was allegedly asked to retire because of his poor stewardship of the company and its stockholders’ interests that saw the stock price fall from a high of around $100 per share, to losing 90% of its value—and which is now trading at about $10 per share.

MGM-Mirage chairman James, Murren, his entire Board of Directors, and most of the company’s senior management should be fired immediately. Window dressing terminations of the likes of senior executive Gary N Jacobs, aren’t nearly enough.

Few doubt that MGM-Mirage will soon be forced into bankruptcy and that that will likely be lead by corporate raider, Carl Icahn, and others.  MGM-Mirage is one of the most poorly run companies in all of American business today.

They’ve all got to go—and we’ve got to ensure that our PERS, our union pension funds, our mutual funds and IRA’s, all divest of MGM-Mirage stock until they divest themselves of Dubai World.

In an act of greed and corporate desperation, MGM-Mirage, instead of securing capital locally or nationally, splitting the company up to raise the revenue necessary to complete CityCenter, or issuing new convertible stock, ran to the corrupted and poisoned investment arm of Dubai—in turn selling a 50% interest in CityCenter and nearly 10% of the entire corporation to their Dubai World friends—without one iota of due diligence performed by anyone; company chairman, board, or state regulators alike.

So, we must vote with our dollars and call for an international boycott of CityCenter and all MGM-Mirage companies until the chairman and board are terminated and the company is extricated from its perverse alliance with Dubai World.

Don’t spend your money at CityCenter, at any  MGM-Mirage property, and don’t buy their stock; history has proven that the only way to change the direction of a corrupted corporation like MGM-Mirage, is to starve it of the revenue it needs to continue its exploitation.

Not only the forever-ruined brand of MGM-Mirage is at stake, but the entire brand of the Las Vegas Gaming market is in jeopardy for MGM-Mirage’s marriage of convenience with Dubai World.

As a global tourism destination, we can’t afford to have MGM-Mirage’s acceptance of Human Rights abuses with its investment partner further damage our state’s number one industry.

The damage they have done to date may be irreversible; today Las Vegas is the name and face of Third World exploitation, thanks to MGM-Mirage!

It is incumbent upon our state’s ‘progressive’ groups, now that the project is finished, to lead the way in holding MGM-Mirage fully accountable for its partnership in acceptance of Human Rights abuses and to demand a full and complete separation and divorce between MGM-Mirage and Dubai World and a complete restructuring of the company that rids Las Vegas of the indelible and shameful stain MGM-Mirage inflicted on our damaged Gaming and Tourism industries.

The sooner they’re all gone, the better.

We here in Nevada must continue to withhold our dollars from MGM-Mirage and thus vote for the fair and equitable treatment of our fellow human beings half a world away that MGM-Mirage chose to exploit without any reservation at all.

It’s the right thing—the only thing—we all can and should do to register our outrage at MGM-Mirage’s corporate misconduct.

Will our state’s ‘progressive’ groups lead the way or be on the wrong side of history and Human Rights…yet again?
